dBm to Watts / mW Converter

Quickly convert between logarithmic RF power readings such as dBm/dBW and linear power values such as Watts and milliwatts. Useful for LTE, 5G, O-RAN, RF testing, lab measurements and link-budget analysis.

dBmLogarithmic power referenced to 1 milliwatt.
WattsLinear RF power used for transmitter output.
50ΩOptional Vrms and Vpp estimate for RF systems.
RF LabUseful for analyzer and signal-generator settings.

RF Power Conversion Calculator

Enter any one value and convert it into dBm, dBW, Watts, milliwatts, microwatts, and voltage across a selected impedance.

Power in dBm
Referenced to 1 mW
Power in Watts
Linear power value
Power in mW / μW
dBW / Voltage
Quick reference: 0 dBm = 1 mW, 10 dBm = 10 mW, 20 dBm = 100 mW, 30 dBm = 1 W, 40 dBm = 10 W.

Conversion Formula

dBm to Watt relation
P(mW) = 10^(dBm / 10)
P(W) = 10^((dBm − 30) / 10)

dBm = 10log10(PmW)
dBW = dBm − 30

Vrms = √(P × R), for impedance R
RF systems commonly use 50Ω impedance. Voltage results are approximate and assume a matched load.

Common dBm to Watt Conversion Table

dBmWattsmilliwattsTypical Telecom Meaning
What is dBm?dBm is a logarithmic power unit referenced to 1 milliwatt.
Why use dBm?RF power varies from tiny receive values to large transmitter outputs. dBm makes comparison easy.
dBm vs dBWdBm is referenced to 1 mW. dBW is referenced to 1 Watt. dBW = dBm − 30.
UE Tx PowerTypical LTE/5G UE max transmit power is often around 23 dBm, about 200 mW.
Lab UsageSignal generators and spectrum analyzers often use dBm for RF levels.
O-RAN / RadioRadio output may be specified in dBm or Watts during lab and field work.

RF Power Interview Q&A

QuestionShort Answer
What is 0 dBm?0 dBm is equal to 1 milliwatt.
What is 30 dBm?30 dBm is equal to 1 Watt.
Why do RF engineers use dBm?Because RF power spans very wide ranges, and logarithmic scale makes comparison easier.
What is the difference between dBm and dB?dBm is an absolute power unit. dB is a relative ratio.
What happens when power increases by 3 dB?Power approximately doubles.
What happens when power increases by 10 dB?Power increases by 10 times.
